Guwahati Airport’s new terminal begins commercial operations

February 25, 2026

Commercial operations have commenced at the new terminal of Lokapriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport in Guwahati, expanding the airport’s annual passenger capacity to 13.1 million. The facility opened two months after its inauguration and marks a major infrastructure upgrade for Northeast India.

The expansion strengthens Guwahati’s role as the region’s primary aviation gateway, supporting new routes, higher flight frequencies and improved international connectivity across South and Southeast Asia. Passenger traffic at the airport has grown steadily over the past decade, crossing 7 million annually and placing it among India’s busiest non-metro airports.

The start of operations saw the arrival of an Akasa Air flight from Mumbai and ceremonial events attended by state leadership and representatives of Adani Airport Holdings.

The new terminal is expected to boost tourism, trade and regional mobility while reinforcing Assam’s positioning as a key economic and travel hub in the Northeast.
