From intimate performances in rural villages to grand spectacles at cultural festivals, the enchanting world of Indian puppetry will transport you to realms where imagination knows no bounds.

The traditional art of ‘Kathputli’ puppetry thrives in the colourful bazaars of Rajasthan. Crafted from wood, cloth, and vibrant textiles, these expressive puppets dance to the tunes of folklore and legends, narrating tales of valour and romance. Eastwards, in the cultural heartland of West Bengal, ‘Putul Nach’ or shadow puppetry takes centre stage. Intricately cut leather puppets cast enchanting shadows on backlit screens, portraying mythological stories and social commentary.

Down south, in the state of Karnataka, the ‘Togalu Gombeyaata’ puppetry tradition unfolds. Carved from goat leather and adorned with vibrant hues, these articulated puppets enact episodes from the epics, showcasing the rich cultural tapestry of the region.

Maha Shivratri, the “Great Night of Shiva,” is one of the most sacred Hindu festivals, celebrated with devotion, fasting, and night-long prayers. It marks the cosmic dance of Lord Shiva—Tandava, symbolizing creation, preservation, and destruction. Devotees observe this night by chanting *Om Namah Shivaya*, offering *bael* [Aegle marmelos] leaves, and meditating for spiritual awakening. There are many spiritual practices and folklore related to this day. Many people believe that the planetary positions are ideal for a spiritual surge in human beings. Hence, the night of Maha Shivratri is spent awakening and connecting with this energy.

Historically, Maha Shivratri is believed to be the night when Lord Shiva married Goddess Parvati, signifying the union of divine energies. Some also believe it to be the night Shiva manifested as the infinite *Jyotirlinga*.
