IGI Runway 29L/11R Closed for Upgrade

March 3, 2026

Operations at Indira Gandhi International Airport will see a temporary adjustment as Runway 29L/11R remains closed for take-offs and landings from 12 am on February 26 until 12 am on May 26. The closure, coinciding with the peak summer travel period, forms part of a comprehensive infrastructure upgrade at the country’s busiest airport.

According to Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL), the rehabilitation programme includes runway resurfacing, construction of a new rapid exit taxiway, and installation of an advanced Instrument Landing System (ILS). Commissioned in 2008, the runway now requires structural strengthening to support sustained growth in aircraft movements and evolving safety standards.

The maintenance was originally planned for February 16 but was deferred due to high-level movements linked to the AI Summit. During the closure, more than 15 taxiways will also be unavailable, with temporary operational procedures in place.

IGI Airport, which handles approximately 1,520 daily flight movements across four runways, will see scheduled capacity marginally reduced to 1,514 movements per day, with authorities aiming to ensure minimal disruption.
