Vande Bharat’s First Sleeper Trains to Begin Service in September 2025

August 13, 2025

India’s first Vande Bharat Sleeper train is set to launch in September 2025, marking a major milestone in overnight railway travel. Designed to combine speed with comfort, these trains will run as semi-high-speed sleepers, reaching up to 160km/h. Each train will feature 16 carriages and offer three classes of service: AC 3-Tier (approx. ₹2,000), AC 2-Tier (around ₹2,500), and AC First Class (roughly ₹3,000).

Manufactured by BEML, the Vande Bharat Sleeper is equipped with automatic doors, smoke alarms, surveillance systems, and advanced odour control for improved safety and comfort. Passenger amenities include enhanced air conditioning, USB ports, spacious luggage compartments, areas for pets, and hygienic bio vacuum toilets with sensory taps. These features aim to elevate the travel experience to international standards.

The priority routes for the initial rollout include New Delhi to Srinagar and New Delhi to Pune, with plans for further connectivity between key metro cities such as Mumbai, Howrah, Sealdah, and Secunderabad. By reducing travel times compared to conventional overnight trains, the Vande Bharat Sleeper will be especially beneficial for business travelers and tourists seeking faster, more comfortable journeys.

With fares competitive to premium trains like Rajdhani and Duronto Express, Indian Railways is set to introduce 10 such sleeper trains in 2025, signaling a broader transformation in overnight travel. The official launch date and final routes are being finalized by the Railway Board, with further updates expected via Indian Railways and IRCTC.
