Karnataka’s Golden Chariot to Introduce New Routes

October 31, 2025

Karnataka’s luxury tourist train, the Golden Chariot, is set to expand its horizons with new routes, including proposed extensions to Mumbai and Aurangabad, according to reports. Operated by the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) and owned by the Karnataka State Tourism Development Corporation (KSTDC), the train is expected to launch its updated circuit in the next financial year.

Sources revealed that shorter, theme-based circuits highlighting lesser-known destinations are also under consideration, with collaborations planned between private tour operators, government agencies, hotels, and travel partners to streamline logistics and enrich guest experiences.

First launched in 2008, the Golden Chariot was temporarily suspended in 2018 due to high operating costs and limited patronage, before being successfully relaunched in 2024. The train remains a hallmark of luxury travel in South India, offering 44 elegant cabins with ensuite facilities, Wi-Fi, and modern amenities.

Onboard highlights include two fine-dining restaurants: Ruchi and Nalapaka, a lounge bar named Madira, a spa, and a fitness centre. Each of its 18 coaches, named after Karnataka’s historic dynasties like Hoysala, Vijayanagara, and Chalukya, reflects the grandeur and heritage of the region, promising travellers a journey steeped in royal charm and comfort.
