Lucknow has earned a coveted spot in UNESCO’s Creative Cities Network under the ‘Gastronomy’ category, a global recognition of its centuries-old culinary heritage. The city now joins 407 others worldwide celebrated for integrating creativity into sustainable urban development.
Known for its Awadhi cuisine, from the melt-in-your-mouth Galouti Kebab and aromatic biryanis to street favourites like chaat and golgappe. Lucknow’s inclusion acknowledges its deep-rooted food traditions and evolving culinary innovation.
The nomination, submitted by the Uttar Pradesh Tourism Department earlier this year, highlights the state’s growing emphasis on promoting cultural and gastronomic tourism. Officials noted that the recognition not only celebrates Lucknow’s timeless flavours but also enhances its global identity as a hub for sustainable and creative gastronomy.
The city’s culinary draw continues to bolster tourism in Uttar Pradesh, which has already seen over seven million visitors in the first half of 2025. With this achievement, Lucknow joins an elite circle of cities where cuisine serves as both a cultural emblem and a bridge for international exchange.
