Madurai Airport Granted International Status

March 12, 2026

The Union Cabinet has approved international status for Madurai Airport, marking a significant step in expanding global connectivity to one of South India’s most celebrated cultural and pilgrimage destinations.

Home to the iconic Meenakshi Amman Temple, which draws millions of devotees and tourists annually, Madurai has long deserved direct international access. The upgrade is expected to ease travel for pilgrims, heritage tourists, and business visitors alike, while also supporting exports and attracting foreign investment to southern Tamil Nadu.

Officials described the move as part of a broader national strategy to develop aviation infrastructure in cities with strong tourism and economic potential. With improved global air links, Madurai is poised to become a key international gateway for the southern part of the state, reinforcing its enduring identity as a centre of culture, faith, and commerce.
