Uttarakhand’s Pithoragarh Unveils Its First Dedicated Astro-Tourism Observatory

January 5, 2026

Pithoragarh has taken a significant step towards science-led and sustainable tourism with the inauguration of its first dedicated Astronomical Observatory. Established by the District Tourism Department in partnership with Starscapes Experiences Pvt. Ltd., the facility was inaugurated by Uttarakhand’s Tourism Minister, Satpal Maharaj.

The launch marks a milestone in positioning Pithoragarh as an emerging astro-tourism destination, leveraging its high altitude and naturally dark skies. The inauguration was attended by District Magistrate Ashish Kumar Bathgain and District Tourism Development Officer Kirti Chand Arya, highlighting the administration’s focus on integrating tourism development with education and community participation.

India’s leading astro-tourism company, Starscapes, has trained local youth as Astro Guides to conduct guided stargazing sessions and manage observatory operations. This community-centric approach aims to enhance scientific literacy while creating sustainable livelihood opportunities for residents.

Speaking at the event, Minister Satpal Maharaj noted that the initiative reflects long-standing efforts to promote astro-tourism in the state. He added that similar observatories are planned across Uttarakhand to strengthen the foundation for science-based tourism.

The observatory will host night-sky observations, astronomy sessions, and educational programmes for students, tourists, and locals alike. With this initiative, Pithoragarh is set to emerge as a responsible tourism destination where world-class infrastructure and local expertise come together to create meaningful, immersive travel experiences.
