Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary Sets New Tourism Revenue Record in 2024–25

June 2, 2025

Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary in Assam’s Morigaon district has achieved a remarkable milestone, generating a record ₹62 lakh in tourist revenue during the 2024–25 season. Known for having the highest density of one-horned rhinoceroses in the country, the sanctuary welcomed around 35,000 visitors, including over 650 international tourists. This marks a notable increase from the previous year’s figures of 30,000 visitors and ₹54 lakh in revenue.

The boost in tourist turnout is attributed to recent improvements in infrastructure, particularly the repair of internal roads, which enhanced accessibility and visitor convenience. These efforts have made it easier for wildlife enthusiasts and nature lovers to explore the sanctuary’s rich biodiversity.

Running from October 15 to May 31 each year, the tourist season at Pobitora not only showcases the majestic rhinos but also a wide range of other wildlife, including golden jackals, wild boars, and more than 2,000 species of migratory birds.

Adding to the region’s conservation momentum, a plantation drive led by a local NGO and supported by a national foundation aims to restore 100 hectares of forest with one lakh native saplings. Pobitora’s success story highlights how ecological efforts and tourism development can go hand-in-hand.
