Seaplane Service from Kochi to Lakshadweep Set to Launch Next Month

August 22, 2025

Kerala is set to inaugurate a new chapter in its aviation history with the launch of seaplane services from Kochi airport to Lakshadweep, expected to commence next month. Cochin International Airport Limited (CIAL) officials confirmed that all preliminary steps, including successful trial runs, have been completed.

The one-way fare for the Kochi–Lakshadweep route will be approximately INR 12,000. SpiceJet has been approved by the Union government to operate seaplanes in this sector. Under the UDAN scheme, ticket prices may drop to between INR 2,000 and 4,000, making it more accessible to the general public. The seaplane, manufactured by De Havilland, will have a passenger capacity of 18 to 20.

Four destinations within Kerala have been proposed for seaplane operations, with services in the state planned to begin after the Kochi–Lakshadweep route is operational. Currently, helicopter services operate to Pampa from CIAL but are considered unaffordable for most, costing around INR 60,000 for a 45-minute journey.

Manu G, CIAL’s airport director, emphasized that the seaplane project aims to enhance connectivity and boost tourism by providing a more affordable travel option compared to helicopters. The concept of seaplane services was first proposed in 2013 but faced opposition from fishermen concerned about impacts on fishing and environmentalists citing ecological risks. Trial flights have since addressed many feasibility concerns, clearing the way for the launch.
