Tourism in the Sissu valley, located in Lahaul-Spiti, will be suspended for 40 days from January 20 to February 28 as local authorities move to safeguard religious rituals and long-standing cultural practices. The decision was taken collectively by the Sissu gram panchayat along with religious and community institutions, reflecting a consensus to prioritise tradition over peak-season tourism.
Situated in the Chandra valley, Sissu has emerged as a popular winter destination in recent years, particularly after improved access via the Atal Tunnel. Snowbound landscapes and adventure experiences have continued to attract visitors despite harsh weather conditions. However, community leaders expressed concern that increasing tourist activity could interfere with solemn observances held during this period.
As a result, all tourism-related activities across the panchayat area will remain prohibited. Local residents note that such seasonal restrictions are part of established practice, especially when rising footfall coincides with spiritually significant phases, underscoring the region’s commitment to protecting its cultural rhythm.
