The new directive, issued by the Department of Immigration and Emigration, makes it compulsory for all foreign tourists to secure travel clearance before arrival, marking a shift from the earlier on-arrival options.
The policy aims to streamline entry procedures, enhance border security, and improve efficiency across Sri Lanka’s ports of entry. Authorities note that this move aligns with global standards in visitor management, ensuring a more seamless and secure experience for international travellers.
Travel and tourism professionals have been advised to notify clients early and encourage the timely completion of ETA applications through the official portal (www.eta.gov.lk) to avoid last-minute delays.
