UPI Now Accepted Across Sri Lanka for Indian Travellers

March 20, 2026

Indian tourists visiting Sri Lanka can now make digital payments using UPI across a growing network of merchants, following an expanded partnership between NPCI International Payments Limited and LankaPay. Travellers can pay by scanning LankaQR codes through any UPI-enabled app, reducing the need to carry cash or manage currency exchange.

Acceptance is currently live at several well-known outlets, including Cinnamon Hotels, Taj Hotels, Barista, Keells Supermarket and Odel, with plans to extend coverage across hospitality, retail and tourism sectors.

The timing is significant. India is Sri Lanka’s largest source of tourist arrivals, with visitor numbers growing from over 4,16,000 in 2024 to more than 5,31,000 in 2025. Making UPI available in-destination removes a practical friction point for a demographic already accustomed to seamless digital payments at home.

For merchants, the integration opens access to a large base of digitally active consumers while reducing dependence on cash handling. NPCI International has indicated it will continue working with Sri Lankan regulators and banks to broaden UPI’s reach across the island.
