When the Sun Turns North: India’s Season of Renewal

December 24, 2024

January does not arrive quietly in India. It announces itself through fire, grain, and sky, through festivals that honour the land and the people who tend it. Lohri, Makar Sankranti, and Pongal mark this moment of transition, when the harvest is gathered and the year begins to turn once more.

Lohri glows at the heart of winter. Bonfires are lit as families gather in their warmth, offering sesame and jaggery to the flames. The fire is both farewell and welcome, bidding the cold its exit while calling in longer days and brighter hopes. Songs rise, drums follow, and the night becomes a celebration of togetherness.

Makar Sankranti arrives with the sun’s northward journey. Sacred rivers draw pilgrims seeking renewal, while rooftops and open skies fill with kites. It is a festival of movement and elevation, where rituals reflect a belief in cleansing, clarity, and fresh beginnings.

In the south, Pongal unfolds with reverence and rhythm. The first rice of the season is cooked slowly in clay pots, allowed to overflow as a sign of abundance. Offered to the Sun God, the dish honours both land and light, reminding families of their deep ties to agriculture and seasonality.

The food of this season is simple yet intentional. Sesame, jaggery, lentils, and rice nourish the body while carrying the wisdom of seasonal eating. Shared dishes become gestures of goodwill, reminders that sustenance is both physical and communal.

Music fills the air. Drums beat, kites rise, and dances circle village streets. Together, these festivals remind us that renewal does not arrive suddenly. It is prepared, honoured, and celebrated slowly, together, and with hope.
