300-Year-Old Haveli in Udaipur Turned into a Luxury Boutique Hotel

August 5, 2025

In the heart of Udaipur, Rajasthan, a 300-year-old family haveli has been lovingly transformed into a luxury boutique hotel, where every stone whispers stories of the past. Once the cherished home of Prakram Singh Chawra, Kaladwas Lal Haveli stands opposite the city’s old ghantaghar, surrounded by memories of market mornings and childhood adventures on cobbled streets.

Restoring the haveli was no small feat. It took over six years and the expertise of the late architect Viral Munshi to revive traditional Mewari craftsmanship. The original beams, Sajjangarh quarry stone façade, and Gutai limework were all painstakingly preserved. The result is an evocative blend of heritage and comfort, with sunlight filtering through intricate jali work, vibrant stained glass on ancient windows, and a cozy library brimming with rare photographs and artifacts.

Guests can choose from seven uniquely themed rooms, each rooted in Mewar’s history, be it the celestial charm of Badal Mahal or the regal spirit of Rakht Chandan and Kalangi. Dining at House of Kaladwas, guests enjoy authentic Mewari fare alongside globally inspired dishes that honour Rajasthan’s bounty. Evenings on the rooftop come alive with local melodies and the aroma of traditional delicacies.

More than a hotel, Kaladwas Lal Haveli is a celebration of Udaipur’s living legacy, a space where the region’s vibrant culture, cuisine, and history are meticulously brought to life.
