Janmashtami, India and Nepal (16th August)

July 22, 2025

Janmashtami, celebrated this year on 16th August 2025, is one of the most cherished Hindu festivals in India and Nepal, marking the divine birth of Lord Krishna, the eighth avatar of Vishnu. The festival is steeped in devotion, symbolizing the triumph of good over evil and the importance of righteousness, love, and compassion.

In India, Janmashtami is celebrated with vibrant midnight prayers (Nishita Puja), devotional singing, and dramatic enactments of Krishna’s life, especially the playful Rasa Leelas. A notable tradition is the Dahi Handi, where teams form human pyramids to break a pot of curd, reflecting Krishna’s childhood mischief. Regional customs abound, with North India focusing on temple festivities and dramatic performances, while Maharashtra is renowned for grand Dahi Handi events.

In Nepal, the spirit is equally fervent, especially at landmarks like Patan’s Krishna Mandir and Kathmandu’s ISKCON Temple. Devotees keep a strict daylong fast, chant hymns, and observe the midnight hour of Krishna’s birth with special rituals and offerings. The Dahi Handi tradition is also seen, primarily in urban centers, but cultural programs and large public gatherings are more prominent here.

Both nations transform into realms of devotion, yet the distinct flavors of community involvement and regional artistry make each celebration unique.
