Odisha’s Sunapur and Puri Beaches Reclaim Blue Flag Status for 2025–26

November 21, 2025

Odisha has once again set a national benchmark in coastal sustainability, with Sunapur and Puri Golden Beach retaining the prestigious Blue Flag Certification for 2025–26. The recognition positions them among the world’s cleanest, safest and most environmentally responsible beaches.

Awarded by the Denmark-based Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE), the Blue Flag is granted only to destinations that meet 33 rigorous criteria spanning water quality, environmental management, safety, and eco-education.

Sunapur Beach earned the honour for the third consecutive year, recognised for its pristine shoreline, river-bay confluence, and strong community-driven conservation practices. Puri Golden Beach secured the certification for the seventh time, supported by smart waste systems, dedicated bathing zones and high safety standards.

Of the 13 Indian beaches featured in the 2025 list, 12 received full certification, underscoring the country’s growing emphasis on sustainable coastal tourism.

Odisha officials attribute the achievement to robust waste management systems, local participation and continued investment in eco-friendly infrastructure. Both certified beaches are equipped with trained lifeguards, accessible pathways, zero liquid-discharge waste systems, surveillance cameras and environmental education kiosks, ensuring visitors a clean, safe and responsible beach experience.
