Kumarakom, Kerala’s serene backwater retreat, is set to transform cultural tourism by offering snake boat races throughout the year. Traditionally tied to the Onam festival, these iconic races will now be accessible to travellers in every season, thanks to a first-of-its-kind initiative featuring newly built fibre snake boats.
Two fibre chundans, crafted in Chellanam and brought to Kumarakom by local enthusiast Jiffy Naduvileparambil, mirror the grandeur of Kerala’s wooden originals. Each boat accommodates 55 oarsmen, five guides to steer, and five rhythm-keepers who beat drums to maintain the tempo—ensuring visitors experience the same pulse-quickening spectacle.
The inaugural race will take place on September 10 at Cheepungal, with future events planned on Vembanad Lake. Hotels and resorts along the lakeside will be able to book customised races for their guests, offering an intimate glimpse into Kerala’s living traditions.
To enhance the visitor experience, Kerala Tourism has also constructed permanent pavilions at Kavanar and Kottahodu Stream, providing comfortable seating and sweeping views of the backwaters.
By lifting seasonal restrictions, Kumarakom opens its waters to year-round celebration. For travellers, it means not just a race, but a deeper encounter with Kerala’s culture, rhythm, and timeless community spirit.
