Ura Yakchoe: A Sacred Unveiling (28 Apr – 2 May)

April 29, 2026

In the quiet valley of Ura Valley, life moves gently through most of the year. But with the arrival of Ura Yakchoe, the stillness gives way to a sense of shared anticipation.

Held at the village temple, this festival centres around a sacred relic, believed to have been brought to Bhutan in the 15th century by the saint Terton Pema Lingpa. For most of the year, it remains hidden. During these few days, it is revealed to the public, drawing villagers and pilgrims who gather to witness something rarely seen.

The celebrations unfold through masked dances, prayers, and quiet rituals that feel deeply rooted in place. Locals dress in their finest traditional attire, and the courtyard becomes a meeting point for generations. There is a sense of continuity here, of traditions carried forward not out of obligation, but belonging.

What stays with you is not just the ceremony, but the intimacy of it all. This is not a spectacle built for crowds, but a moment shared within a community, where faith feels close, personal, and gently held.
