Kerala has inaugurated India’s first designer zoo, the Thrissur Zoological Park at Puthur, marking a milestone in the country’s approach to wildlife conservation and visitor experience. Spread across 338 acres of forested land near the Western Ghats, the zoo was opened by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and developed with support from the Kerala Infrastructure Investment Fund Board (KIIFB).
Designed by renowned Australian zoo planner Jon Coe, the park replaces traditional enclosures with naturalistic habitats, using deep trenches and transparent glass barriers to offer both freedom to animals and unobstructed views for visitors.
The vast landscape is divided into themed zones: the Silent Valley Zone, African Zululand Zone, Reptile Zone, and Great Aviary Zone. Home to about 70 species, from Nilgiri tahr and green anaconda to zebras and giraffes. A VR-powered Hologram Zoo and petting area further enhance the educational experience.
All animals from Thrissur’s Chembukkavu Zoo have been relocated to the new site. The park will open in phases, beginning with a two-month trial for researchers and NGOs, before a full public opening in January 2026. The launch marks a new era of immersive, humane wildlife tourism in India.
