India Issues Advisory as Iran Ends Visa-Free Entry for Indian Travellers

November 21, 2025

India’s Ministry of External Affairs has issued a public advisory following Iran’s decision to suspend its visa-waiver facility for Indian passport holders. Effective November 22, 2025, Indian nationals must obtain a visa in advance for both entry into and transit through Iran.

The move comes after several Indians were reportedly misled by agents offering false job prospects or onward travel opportunities. Taking advantage of the visa-free provision, many were taken to Iran and later kidnapped for ransom, prompting Iran to withdraw the exemption for ordinary passport holders.

The MEA has urged travellers to remain vigilant, avoid unauthorised agents, and ensure they carry a valid Iranian visa before booking flights. With the change, the previous arrangement allowing limited visa-free entry for Indian tourists is no longer applicable, and all travellers must adhere to the updated requirements.
