Gujarat’s Lion Population Roars to 891: A Conservation Success Story

May 23, 2025

In a remarkable win for wildlife conservation, Gujarat has witnessed a significant rise in its Asiatic lion population, which has increased from 674 in 2020 to 891 in 2025. This 32% growth over five years highlights the effectiveness of dedicated efforts by forest officials, conservationists, and local communities.

The announcement was made by Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, following the 16th Asiatic Lion Census conducted between May 10 and 13. The survey spanned over 35,000 square kilometers across 11 districts including Gir Somnath, Junagadh, Amreli, and Bhavnagar. More than 3,000 personnel participated in this comprehensive count.

Of the total lions recorded, 507 were found outside the traditional Gir forest region, indicating a successful expansion of the species’ territory. The demographic breakdown includes 196 males, 330 females, 140 sub-adults, and 225 cubs—an encouraging sign for future generations.

This population boom is a testament to Gujarat’s robust conservation policies, habitat management, and anti-poaching measures. However, experts caution that sustainable growth will require continued efforts in habitat expansion and conflict mitigation.

With the only wild population of Asiatic lions in the world, Gujarat’s success story serves as a global model for wildlife preservation and biodiversity management.
