IndiGo Debuts Long-Haul Flights to Manchester and Amsterdam

July 2, 2025

IndiGo has officially entered the long-haul market with the launch of direct flights from Mumbai to Manchester and Amsterdam, marking a major milestone for India’s largest airline. The Manchester route began on July 1, followed by Amsterdam on July 2, both operated by Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners leased from Norse Atlantic Airways.

This move marks IndiGo’s transition from a regional powerhouse to a carrier with global ambitions. The widebody aircraft features a two-class layout with 56 IndiGoStretch seats and 282 economy seats, each with personal entertainment screens and enhanced onboard amenities.

Passengers on these routes can now enjoy complimentary hot meals, tea, coffee, and wine. Vegetarian meals are standard, while non-vegetarian options are available through pre-booking. Catering partners include Oberoi and Sula Vineyards, adding a premium touch to the in-flight experience.

IndiGoStretch travellers also benefit from 46 kg of check-in baggage, 12 kg cabin allowance, and priority services.

The Mumbai–Manchester route re-establishes a direct connection between the two cities, last operated by Jet Airways in 2018. Meanwhile, the Amsterdam route brings new competition to established players like KLM and Air India. With competitive fares and strong domestic connectivity, IndiGo aims to capture a slice of the Europe-bound market. A potential extension of its codeshare with Air France-KLM at Amsterdam could further expand its reach across the continent.

These routes are part of IndiGo’s larger global expansion strategy, ‘Towards New Heights and Across New Frontiers’, which targets 10 new international destinations in FY25, including London, Athens, and Copenhagen.

CEO Pieter Elbers described the launch as a defining moment: “These routes connect India with two important European centers of business, tourism, and culture. We are excited to share India by IndiGo with more of the world.”

The airline has leased six Dreamliners for long-haul operations, with more arriving by late 2025. A321XLRs are expected later this year, and A350s from 2027.

With these services, IndiGo is blending its low-cost model with full-service touches, reshaping expectations of what affordable long-haul travel can look like.
