Sikkim Opens Doka-La and Cho-La for Domestic Tourism from October 1

September 29, 2025

The Government of Sikkim will open the high-altitude passes of Doka-La and Cho-La to Indian tourists from October 1, 2025, marking a significant step in promoting sustainable tourism in sensitive border areas. Entry will be restricted to Indian citizens with valid voter IDs, and permits must be obtained through registered tour operators after confirming at least one night’s homestay booking along the Silk Route, including Kupup, Gnathang, Zuluk, or Padamchen.

A permit fee of ₹1,120 covers access to the Wildlife Sanctuary and Tsomgo Pokhari Sangrakshan Samiti. To protect the fragile ecosystem, daily entries will be capped at 25 tourist vehicles and 25 bikers, all operated by licensed travel companies. Private vehicles are prohibited, and only vehicles with a minimum 1,400 cc engine capacity will be allowed due to the challenging terrain. Fixed fares are set at ₹12,000 for category Z and ₹11,000 for category J vehicles for a two-day package.

Security checks by the Army, Sikkim Police, and Tourism Department will ensure safe travel, with scheduled departures to manage weather conditions. Tourists must carry garbage bags and dispose of waste at designated collection points, balancing access with environmental preservation in this spectacular Himalayan region.
