Sri Lanka has introduced a Digital Nomad Visa alongside an extended-validity tourist visa to attract remote workers and long-stay travellers. The new categories, approved by the Cabinet, aim to align the country’s entry policies with evolving global travel and work patterns.
The Digital Nomad Visa allows foreign nationals to reside in Sri Lanka while working remotely for employers based overseas, without access to local employment. Authorities have opened online applications, providing clearer guidelines after earlier announcements of the scheme.
Travellers can also apply for the extended tourist visa through the country’s electronic visa platform and mobile app, enabling longer stays with digital processing. The visa permits limited business representation for overseas companies but restricts local income-generating activities.
The initiative reflects Sri Lanka’s push to position itself as a lifestyle destination for remote professionals, supporting tourism recovery while encouraging longer visitor spending and destination engagement.
