EU Entry/Exit System Goes Fully Operational from April 2026

April 7, 2026

The European Union’s Entry/Exit System (EES) becomes fully operational on 10 April 2026, completing a phased rollout that began in October 2025 across 29 Schengen countries.

The system replaces traditional passport stamps with digital records, capturing biometric data including fingerprints and facial images alongside passport details, entry and exit dates, and any records of refused entry. Since its October launch, over 45 million border crossings have been recorded, with the data already helping authorities flag irregular travel patterns and identity discrepancies that would previously have gone undetected.

For non-EU travellers, the process adds a biometric registration step at first entry. Subsequent crossings draw on stored records, which are expected to streamline future border checks over time.

For travel advisors routing clients through Europe, it is worth flagging that first-time registration may add time at the border, particularly during peak travel periods. Clients should carry complete documentation and be prepared for fingerprinting and a facial scan on arrival.
