Leh’s Kushok Bakula Rimpochee Airport has seen its daily flight operations more than double, rising from eight to 18 flights per day, with two additional services expected to follow shortly. The increase, announced by Ladakh Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena, connects Leh with Delhi, Mumbai, Srinagar, and Chandigarh, alongside two charter flights to Delhi and Chandigarh.
The timing is deliberate. Ladakh experienced a notable decline in tourist arrivals last year, affecting livelihoods across the region’s tourism-dependent economy. Industry bodies including the All Ladakh Tour Operators Association and All Kargil Travel Trade Association had formally requested the L-G’s intervention to improve connectivity ahead of the peak season.
The expanded schedule also sets the stage for two significant events: the Great Exposition of the Holy Relics of Buddha in May and the first-ever Sidhu Maha Kumbh in June, both expected to draw considerable domestic and international interest.
Infrastructure improvements are also underway. A new terminal building at the airport is nearing completion and will meaningfully increase passenger handling capacity when it opens.
The administration has framed the connectivity push as part of a broader commitment to sustainable, well-planned tourism development, positioning Ladakh as one of India’s most compelling travel destinations for the season ahead.
