Elephant rides at Jaipur’s Amer Fort, once a signature experience for international visitors, are steadily disappearing from travel itineraries. Local travel agencies, guides and tourism professionals say most overseas tour operators have stopped including the rides, reflecting a broader shift towards responsible and cruelty-free tourism.
Until a decade ago, an elephant ride was widely regarded as an essential part of an Amer Fort visit. Today, however, international travellers are showing little interest in the experience and are increasingly choosing animal shelters and other ethical alternatives.
Animal welfare campaigns by international organisations and activists have played a role in changing tourist preferences. Concerns over the treatment of elephants, along with rising costs and past safety issues, have further reduced demand.
Amer Fort remains a key attraction on Jaipur itineraries, but the traditional elephant safari is no longer considered a must-do. A decline in international tourist arrivals in recent years has also contributed to the fall in demand, signalling a wider change in how visitors experience Rajasthan’s heritage.
