Mumbai marked a milestone in India’s maritime journey with the inauguration of the Mumbai International Cruise Terminal (MICT) at Indira Dock. Opened by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on September 21 under the Cruise Bharat Mission, the ultra-modern terminal is set to transform the city into a premier hub for global cruise tourism.
Spanning over 415,000 square feet, the MICT is designed to handle one million passengers annually and can berth five cruise ships simultaneously, offering a seamless travel experience for domestic and international travellers. Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal highlighted Mumbai’s deep maritime legacy, calling the terminal a natural evolution for a city long central to India’s coastal trade.
The launch was part of the larger ‘Samudra se Samriddhi’ initiative, where the Prime Minister also laid foundation stones for key port and energy projects across India. These include container terminals at Kolkata and Paradip, multi-cargo facilities at Kandla and Ennore, renewable energy plants, and coastal protection works from Chennai to Car Nicobar.
With this landmark addition, Mumbai strengthens its role as India’s gateway to the seas, blending cutting-edge infrastructure with the nation’s enduring maritime heritage.
