He was born Ajaypal Singh Banga in Khadki, in what was then Bombay State, the son of an army lieutenant-general whose postings moved the family across a young, restless India. He studied in Shimla, then Hyderabad, before economics at St. Stephen’s College and an MBA at IIM Ahmedabad shaped the mind that would later run some of the world’s largest institutions.
His career began humbly, as a management trainee at Nestlé in 1981, followed by years bringing Pizza Hut and KFC into a liberalising India with PepsiCo. At Citigroup, he trained briefly as a debt collector before rising to lead its global consumer business. Then came Mastercard, where, as CEO, he tripled revenue and grew its market value from under 30 billion dollars to over 360 billion dollars.
In 2023, he became the fourteenth President of the World Bank, the first Indian-born leader to hold the post, steering global conversations on poverty, climate, and food security.
What makes his story land differently is this: a boy who grew up moving between Indian cantonments now sits at the head of an institution shaping the fortunes of nations, carrying India in his name wherever he goes.
