Baisakhi (14 April)

March 11, 2025

Celebrated on April 14th this year, Baisakhi embodies two distinct aspects in one festival. For farmers across Punjab, it marks the harvest of the rabi crops, a moment of deep gratitude for the season’s abundance.

For the Sikh community, it holds something even more profound: in 1699, Guru Gobind Singh Ji initiated the first five Sikhs, the Panj Pyare, and established the Khalsa Panth, a collective built on courage, equality, and devotion.

The day begins at the Gurdwara, with kirtans, the reading of the Guru Granth Sahib, and the ceremonial replacement of the Nishan Sahib, the Sikh flag. From there, it spills joyfully into the streets. Nagar Kirtan processions move through cities, community langars feed thousands, and the fields come alive with Bhangra and Gidda dances. Tables are laid with sarson da saag, makki di roti, and tall glasses of lassi. The air smells of kada prasad and pinni. In Punjab, this is what joy looks like.
