Ladakh To Launch India’s First High-Altitude Wildlife Safari

August 11, 2026

Ladakh is preparing to launch India’s first high-altitude wildlife safari, following approval from Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena for guided jeep safaris on snow leopard and birdwatching trails across the region.

Modelled on safari operations at Kaziranga and Ranthambore, the initiative will use open-back vehicles driven by trained local drivers and guides. Potential routes are being identified across Hemis National Park, Changthang, Karakoram Wildlife Sanctuary, and wildlife-rich areas including Nubra, Zanskar, Sham, Kargil, and Drass. Ten birdwatching hides will be established at key hotspots, and 20 local youths will be trained in bird identification and spotting.

The move is designed to curb illegal off-roading and minimise wildlife disturbance while creating structured economic opportunities for local communities. Ladakh is home to 477 of India’s estimated 718 snow leopards, making it the country’s most significant snow leopard habitat.

The initiative falls under the newly formed SHAN Conservation Society, which has been tasked with developing a broader roadmap for community-led conservation, plastic-free tourism, and sustainable livelihoods. Additional plans include wildlife clubs in 50 schools, photography fellowships for local youth, and training for women artisans to produce wildlife-themed souvenirs.
