Long ago, as the story goes, Goddess Parvati shaped a boy from turmeric paste and breathed him into being, setting him at her door as a guardian while she bathed. When Shiva returned and found his path blocked by a stranger, a clash followed that ended in sorrow, until he restored the boy with the head of an elephant and declared him Ganesha, foremost among gods, remover of obstacles. From that moment, no beginning in India has felt complete without his blessing.
Ganesh Chaturthi celebrates his birth, believed to fall on the fourth day of the bright fortnight of Bhadrapada. What began as quiet household worship grew, over a century ago, into a public festival uniting communities across caste and class, a transformation credited to freedom fighter Bal Gangadhar Tilak. Today, elaborately sculpted idols are welcomed into homes and grand pandals with music and colour, worshipped for days, and finally carried in joyous processions to rivers, lakes, and the sea, where they are immersed amid chants of “Ganpati Bappa Morya.”
For the traveller, it is a chance to witness devotion spill onto every street, and to feel, if only for a few days, an entire city move as one heartbeat.
