Black Lacquer Opens As Mumbai’s First Serious Vinyl Listening Bar

May 25, 2026

There is a new kind of nightlife tucked beneath Roswyn, a Morgans Originals Hotel in Mumbai. Black Lacquer is an underground vinyl listening bar built around a single premise: music first, everything else in service of it.

Originally conceived in London, the space draws its mood from late-night Tokyo and 1950s Miami. The room is dark, close, and deliberately intimate, with low lighting, polished finishes, and walls lined with records. It sits somewhere between a bar and a social club without being entirely either.

The vinyl collection is extensive and the programming shifts daily, moving from slower, easier sets early in the evening toward something more charged as the night builds. No two evenings repeat themselves in quite the same way.

The drinks take a similar approach: less, but better. Cocktails are clean and balanced, accompanied by sake, shochu, Japanese draft beer, and a wine and Champagne list that works from a first drink through to a last. House-made seasonal sodas give the non-alcoholic options the same level of consideration. Food is izakaya-style, designed for sharing and grazing between conversations.

For a city with an active nightlife scene, Black Lacquer fills a gap that has long existed: a space that feels considered without being complicated, and social without performing loudness for its own sake.
