Wild Buffalo Return To Kanha After Four Decades In MP

May 25, 2026

Madhya Pradesh has reintroduced the Asiatic wild water buffalo to Kanha Tiger Reserve, marking the species’ return to the region for the first time since 1979. Four sub-adult buffaloes have been translocated from Assam in the first phase, with a target of 50 animals established as a founder population. Eight will be moved during this season.

The reintroduction is being carried out under veterinary supervision from both Kaziranga and Kanha, with the Supkhar and Topla area within Kanha identified as the release site. A highland meadow with undulating grasslands and perennial water streams, it was also the location of the last recorded wild buffalo sighting in the region over 40 years ago.

The initiative is part of a formal partnership between Madhya Pradesh and Assam, with the state offering three tigers and six crocodiles to Assam in exchange, setting a precedent for inter-state wildlife cooperation.

The buffalo reintroduction follows the establishment of cheetah populations at Kuno and Gandhi Sagar, with a third sanctuary near Sagar nearing completion. Chief Minister Mohan Yadav has indicated that rhinoceros relocation is also under discussion with Assam, as the state continues to position itself as India’s leading conservation destination.
