Born in Madurai and raised in Chennai, Sundar Pichai grew up in a middle-class household where education, hard work and curiosity were deeply valued. His father was an electrical engineer, and conversations about technology often found their way home. Pichai has spoken of how the arrival of everyday technologies such as a telephone or refrigerator could make a meaningful difference to family life—an early fascination that would eventually take him far beyond the neighbourhoods of Chennai.
His academic journey began in India, taking him to the Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur, where he studied metallurgical engineering. From there, he travelled to the United States to pursue a master’s degree in materials science and engineering at Stanford University, followed by an MBA from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. After early roles at Applied Materials and McKinsey & Company, Pichai joined Google in 2004. It was here that his ability to understand both technology and the people using it began to shape an extraordinary career.
Among his early responsibilities was Google’s Toolbar, but it was his involvement in the development of Google Chrome that became one of the defining chapters of his rise. Launched in 2008, Chrome would grow into one of the world’s most widely used web browsers. Pichai’s responsibilities continued to expand across products including Android, Search, Maps and other major Google platforms. In 2015, he was appointed CEO of Google, and four years later, he became CEO of its parent company, Alphabet.
Today, Pichai stands at the centre of a technological transformation that is reshaping how billions of people search, communicate, work and increasingly interact with artificial intelligence. Yet behind one of the most influential positions in global technology remains a journey that began thousands of kilometres away—in classrooms in Chennai and later in the halls of IIT Kharagpur.
In 2022, India honoured him with the Padma Bhushan for his contribution to trade and industry. It was a fitting recognition of a journey that has become global in scale without losing sight of where it began. From a young student fascinated by the possibilities of technology to the leader of Google and Alphabet, Sundar Pichai’s story is, in many ways, one of an Indian education and upbringing finding its place on the world stage.
